UCAS Support & Reference for private candidates

UCAS for private candidates: reference and predicted grades

A UCAS application needs a reference and predicted grades from an institution that knows your work. For private candidates we arrange both through a marked mock at a JCQ-registered partner centre, and coordinate it against your UCAS deadline.

Can a private candidate apply to university through UCAS?

Yes. Universities assess private candidates on exactly the same basis as school applicants: your grades, your personal statement and your reference. Nothing on your application or certificate shows that you entered privately. The two things a school normally supplies, a reference and predicted grades, are what a private candidate has to arrange, and that is the part that goes wrong when it is left to the last few weeks before the January deadline.

London Elite Exams arranges both through its UCAS Support & Reference option: you sit a marked mock in your subjects at a partner examination centre, the centre's qualified teacher or assessor marks it, and on that evidence the centre's academic assessor sets your predicted grades and issues a formal UCAS reference. We coordinate the timetable so the reference is ready before your UCAS deadline.

The UCAS problem private candidates actually have

It is not the application. It is the reference. UCAS requires one, and a candidate with no school has nobody obvious to write it, which is why this is the part that derails otherwise strong private candidate applications, usually in January when it is too late to arrange.

A reference can come from a tutor, a training provider, an employer or an examination centre that knows your academic work. What it cannot come from is a relative. Decide who will write yours months before the deadline, not weeks.

How predicted grades are issued for a private candidate

A predicted grade is a professional judgement that must rest on evidence of your work; universities discount predictions that read as guesses. With our UCAS Support & Reference option the evidence is a marked mock examination, sat under exam conditions at a partner centre and marked against the specification you are entered for, so choose your exam board before you book.

  1. 1Book the UCAS Support & Reference option with your exam entry, or on its own if your entry is already made.
  2. 2Sit the mock at the partner centre: one timed paper per subject, under examination conditions.
  3. 3The centre's qualified teacher or assessor marks the paper and sets a predicted grade on that evidence.
  4. 4The centre's academic assessor writes your formal UCAS reference, covering the grades predicted and the work seen.
  5. 5We send both to you and tell you how to enter the referee details in your UCAS application, in time for your deadline.

UCAS deadlines for 2027 entry

Applications for courses starting in 2027 opened on 1 September 2026. The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses was 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. The equal-consideration deadline for most other courses is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time; applications after that date are passed to universities for consideration where places remain, and Clearing opens from results day in August.

A mock and a reference need to be in place several weeks before the deadline you are aiming for, so book the option as soon as you know which courses you are applying to.

Applying after results instead

Applying post-qualification, with achieved grades, removes the prediction problem entirely and puts you in a strong position; it suits candidates taking a year out or applying for deferred entry. Our Summer (June) 2027 results reach you on results day in August, and a reference can still be issued on the basis of your mock and your achieved grades.

Admissions tests

UCAT and LNAT are booked by the candidate directly with the test provider and sat at the provider's own test centres; they are not arranged through examination centres. STEP Mathematics, used by Cambridge, Warwick and others, is a written paper we can enter you for.

What the option includes

The UCAS Support & Reference option covers the marked mock in each subject, the predicted grades, the formal reference and our coordination against your deadline. It is listed with the other add-ons on our fees page and is itemised in your booking before you pay; the marked mock is part of the option, because the reference depends on it.

Access arrangements for the mock

If you have evidence for access arrangements such as extra time or rest breaks, the same arrangements can be applied to the mock, so that the predicted grade reflects the conditions you will have in the real examination.

UCAS as a private candidate: your questions answered

Do universities accept private candidates?

Yes. Admissions decisions rest on grades, the personal statement and the reference, and nothing on your application or certificate shows how you were entered. The only part a private candidate must plan differently is the reference and predicted grades, which a school would otherwise provide.

How do I apply to UCAS as a private candidate?

You apply as an independent applicant through UCAS Hub rather than through a school, enter your qualifications and pending examinations, and nominate a referee who knows your academic work. Our UCAS Support & Reference option provides the reference and predicted grades from a marked mock at a partner centre.

Who writes my UCAS reference if I am a private candidate?

Someone who knows your academic work and is not a relative: a tutor, a course provider, an employer, or the academic assessor at the partner centre where you sat a marked mock. Arrange it months before the deadline, not weeks.

Can an exam centre give me predicted grades?

Only with evidence of your work. A centre that has merely entered you for papers cannot predict honestly. Through our UCAS Support & Reference option you sit a marked mock under exam conditions; the centre's qualified assessor marks it and sets the predicted grade on that evidence.

Should I apply before or after I have my results?

Either works. Applying with predicted grades keeps you in the main January cycle; applying after results, with achieved grades, removes the prediction problem and suits candidates taking a year out. Our Summer 2027 results reach you on results day in August.

Can I go to university without GCSE Maths or English?

Many courses require a grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language and Mathematics, or an accepted equivalent, so check each course's entry requirements. If you need the grade, GCSE English Language and Maths can be resat in November as well as in the summer.
